Google App Engine (GAE) is a cloud platform for hosting web applications. It does not like traditional web hosting, your web applications will run on Google Web Servers and you don't have to take care about server maintainance, administration. Google guys do it for you. It is launched April 2008 as free service but there are many limits and bugs in their plarform and API. They just have enabled billing for that service and will support more features.
Google App Engine overview
- Just support python programming language only. Maybe, We support others in this year (2009)
- No custom python modules in C/C++
- Web application does not allow to write into filesystem (read only)
- Web applications run on a cloud platform.
- Web application only make request to external by url fetch
- No SQL, they use Bigtable and GQL
- They provide a simple Python Web application framework and Python modules as Mailing, Memcached, Google Account, Imaging, Datasource accessing...
According to free account, user can create 10 applications with 500MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month.
Developing Web Applications with Google App Engine
You develop and upload applications for Google App Engine using the App Engine software development kit (SDK).
The SDK includes a web server application that simulates the App Engine environment, including a local version of the datastore, Google Accounts, and the ability to fetch URLs and send email directly from your computer using the App Engine APIs. The SDK runs on any computer with Python 2.5, and versions are available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. (Excerpted From Google)
There are some options to develop a webapp with GAE
- Google Web Application Framework (Webapp Framework)
- Django. There are some patches, helpers, Utils to take Django runs on Google Platform
- Web2py
- Some other Python frameworks with modification
Currently, i am using Web2py to develop some webapps on GAE. I hope they will support PHP soon so i can run Drupal on Google Platform. But Google will not support SQL so we will make some changes in Drupal to run on Google servers when they ready support PHP. in mean time, we can use google platform as free CDN for Drupal;)
I will write some entries about developing Web applications with Google App Engine by using Web2py, a simple but powerfull framework.
